Battery Fires

Battery fires are new to the fire service. They are difficult to deal with. Many fire departments are experimenting with different methods searching for the best and safest option for effectively extinguishing battery fires.

In the meantime, if you are going to use water or a piercing nozzle in an attempt to extinguish an EV battery fire, keep in mind that adding foam concentrate reduces the water’s surface tension allowing the water to penetrate easier. Using high energy foam also introduces tiny bubbles that have a higher surface to mass ratio than do water drops, allowing for faster heat absorption.

Note: There is no scientific evidence suggesting that foam will hinder the runaway electric reaction (shorting) of the batteries.

If any new methods involving Class A Foam come to light in the future, they will be discussed here.
