CAF Basics

Intro to CAF Basics

Let’s start with the basics and build your CAF IQ.

CAF FACTS
CAF is Foam (High energy)
Foam is Bubbles!!
Bubbles is Water!!

Bubbles have an increased (STMR) surface area over water drops to absorb heat faster! And that’s all there is!!!

A-FOAM REFERSHER

CompressedAirFoam.com is based on prior knowledge of Class A Foam. Utilizing CAF or operating a CAFS depends on a basic knowledge of firefighting (foaming) detergent concentrates, solution, basic operations of concentrate proportioners and the benefits of bubbles.

For personnel not comfortable with their Class A (Ordinary Combustible) Foam IQ, please visit the A-Foam section to refresh on the A-Foam Basics. To check on your current A-Foam IQ, check out our A-Foam IQ Quiz. Personnel comfortable with the A-Foam IQ are ready to move forward to learn more about CAF.

A quick refresher:
CAF is Bubbles!!
Water + Firefighting Foaming Detergent Concentrate (=Solution) + Air (Compressed) + Agitation = FOAM!!!

As a bubble of any size, all the water is on the outside of the bubble (air is in the middle) thus, unlike a drop, this exposes all the water to the heat. This is why water in a bubble form is superior in heat absorption as compared to water in a drop form.

TRACKS

The Basic Section is broken into two tracks – choose the path based on need!!

TRACK 1 – Your department wants to GO CAF but has little knowledge on which direction to head in getting started and how to go about purchasing a System(s).

TRACK 2 – Your department has a system but personnel are not comfortable with it’s operation.

A-Foam IQ (Quiz)

Do you know what you need to know about A Foam??Take the quiz and see. If you scored 100%, congratulations. You are ready to move on. If you struggled for the right answers, it might be best to go back and learn more of the basics. Many CAF programs fail due to a lack of knowledge …

Track 1 – New CAF Program

Welcome to Track 1 – Designed for the department that wants to get into using Class A Foam and Compressed Air Foam, and has not yet purchased a system. This section covers information recommended to know prior to jumping in. Topics in Track 1 section will be added as they become available, so check back …

Track 2 – Basic CAFS Operations – Let’s Make CAF

The basic operation of a basic CAF system: NOTE: It is not recommended that fire personnel attempt to operate a CAF System on or off a fire scene without prior thorough knowledge of A-Foam basics and without the expressed permission from the local authority having jurisdiction. Prior to operating the CAF system, obtain permission from …

CAF Nozzles

What is in the hose? For water operations, there is a solid water stream in the hose. Without a nozzle, a straight stream exits the hose. A fog nozzle is used to shred the solid stream into drops. It will also allow you to adjust the flow pattern. For CAF operations, the water (W), concentrate …

How NOT to Destroy a CAF System

Now that you are ready to play with the CAF system, lets discuss ways a system can be destoyed and the simple methods to avoid this occurance. As previously discussed in the CAF Basics, a CAF system is basically three systems combined to mix foam – W (Water Pump) + Conc (Proportioner Pump) (=Solution)  + …
