Return to B-Foam Concentrate

UL – 162

What is UL 162?

UL-162 is a test for the application effectiveness of a Class B concentrate. It is not a safety/environment test.

  • UL 162 is the International standard on Fire Fighting Foam Protection for Foam Equipment and Liquid Concentrates for Class B fuels. This standard is the recognised test method carried out by the UL (Underwriters Laboratory), an independent not-for-profit organisation.
  • UL 162 requires a 50 sq ft heptane fire with a pre-burn of 60 seconds to be extinguished at an application Rate of 1.63L/m² using a freeze protected foam with potable (fresh) and sea water.

Using products that meet the UL-162 Testing/Listing process assists the fire service knowing (with training and practice) the Class B product should meet their expectations.

However, it is never recommended to purchase a product, no matter the certification, and put it directly on a rig. All firefighters should Play with the product (DIY – Performance Evaluation) to determine if the product performs as expected. Train and practice with all products. Do not wait for the first emergency to try out something new. This could be disasterous.
