What is Firefighting Foam?

FIREFIGHTING FOAM = BUBBLES

What are Bubbles – Water (Enhanced Water)

Not all Water is Foam – but Firefighting Foam is Water.

No water is reduced or replaced in the making of Foam.

The water is enhanced!!

How do we make foam? The formula is:

W (water) + Conc (concentrate) (=Solution) + Air + Agitation = Foam

  • Water – Liquid Water – 32-212 degrees F (0-100 degrees C)
  • Concentrate – The concentrate determines the type of fire situation that can be controlled.
  • Air – There are several ways to add air – Venturi (aspirated), Compressed, bounce, shear.
  • Agitation – basically stirring it up – several methods available

What does Foam (bubbles/water) do?

  • Cools (removes heat)
  • Smothers -(removes oxygen)
  • Wetting (removes available combustible fuels)

Foam is Bubbles

Bubbles is Water

1 Bubble at a time
Many Bubbles at a time (NAF)
Millions of Bubbles at a time (CAF)

Why are Bubbles Better?

The increased surface area of water bubbles over the water drops is why Firefighting Foam extinguishes fire faster – providing
Life Saving Safety for Fire Fighters.
